Relieve Your Discomfort and Enhance Your Appearance

Breast Reduction Ashburn, Leesburg

Breast Reduction - Leesburg and AshburnWomen with large breasts may experience dissatisfaction with the appearance of their chests, as well as physical discomfort in the form of chronic neck and back pain. In order to reduce the size of their breasts and create shapely, proportionate contours, many women turn to cosmetic surgery. Also known as a “reduction mammaplasty,” a breast reduction removes the excess fat, glandular tissue and skin from disproportionately large breasts.

By performing breast reduction surgery at our Ashburn, Leesburg, and Reston offices, Dr. Mountcastle frees patients from the emotional and physical discomfort of large breasts. Contact us today to schedule a consultation, or to learn more about the breast reduction procedure.

The Breast Reduction Procedure

Anesthesia

During the breast reduction procedure, which typically lasts two to four hours, patients are sedated with general anesthesia and tumescent anesthesia which is a diluted numbing solution which is injected into the breast during the surgery.  Tumescent solution contains epinephrine, a medicine which minimizes blood loss and provides excellent post-operative pain control.

Incision Options

Breast reduction incision techniques are designed to be as discreet as possible. Options include a circumferential incision around the areola, a keyhole or “lollipop” incision that circles the areola and descends to the inframammary crease, and an anchor-shaped incision that follows the natural curve of the breast. While the incision lines will be permanent, Dr. Mountcastle makes every effort to ensure that they may be effectively concealed beneath undergarments and bathing suits.

Removing Tissue and Reshaping the Breasts

Once the incision has been made, Dr. Mountcastle will remove excess fat, tissue and skin from the breasts. Because the areolas of large breasts often become stretched, they too may be reduced in size. In nearly all cases, the nipple and areola will remain attached to the original blood supply; however, in cases involving extremely large breasts, the nipple and areola may need to be removed and transplanted. Depending on the amount of excess fat present in the breasts, liposuction may be performed in conjunction with reduction surgery.

Closing the Incision Site

Serving as reinforcements for the newly shaped breast, sutures are layered deep within the breast tissue. The incision sites will be closed with stitches and skin adhesives. Patients typically follow up two weeks after the surgery to have their surgery site check and sutures that are placed outside the skin removed.

Educating yourself is the best way to make an informed decision about pursuing treatment. If you have any questions about the breast reduction procedure, please contact the Ashburn, Leesburg, or Reston office of Dr. Mountcastle.

After Breast Reduction Surgery

While minimal discomfort, such as soreness and swelling, is expected for several weeks after breast reduction surgery, Dr. Mountcastle will provide you with pain medication to help relieve any post-operative pain. You will be able to resume normal activity after approximately one week, although strenuous activities should be avoided for approximately three to four weeks.

Costs of Breast Reduction Surgery

Because Dr. Mountcastle accepts most insurance plans, the costs of your breast reduction surgery may be covered by your medical provider, as the treatment provides health benefits in addition to aesthetic benefits. Important factors that determine whether your insurance will cover the cost of your breast reduction include the presence of neck and or back pain, rashes, infections, and bra-strap grooving. Some insurance companies require you to have undergone physical therapy to improve your back or neck pain or a consultation with a spine doctor to further assess other causes of the pain. The best way to receive an accurate assessment of what breast reduction surgery will cost is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Mountcastle.  If your insurance does not cover the cost of your breast reduction surgery, a variety of factors, including the size of the breasts being treated, the need to reposition the nipple and areola, and the use of liposuction in conjunction with excision will factor into the overall cost.
