Improve Your Body’s Shape
Laser Liposuction Leesburg, Ashburn, Reston
Diet and exercise are the ideal ways to achieve a slender, toned physique, but they may fall short of delivering the results you desire. Weight fluctuations, aging, heredity and pregnancy can lead to stubborn accumulations of fat that cannot be eliminated with even the most rigorous fitness routine. When this is the case, liposuction provides a valuable solution by removing excess fat, as well as slimming and reshaping the body. Liposuction can be performed alone, or in conjunction with breast reductions, body lifts, or tummy tuck procedures. To achieve a smoother silhouette with liposuction, contact Dr. Mountcastle in Ashburn, Leesburg, or Reston today.
Who Is a Candidate for Liposuction?
Liposuction is a procedure designed to shape and tighten the body by removing pockets of localized fat. However, it is not intended as a weight loss surgery. The ideal candidates for liposuction should
- Be at an average or slightly above-average weight, and in overall good health
- Have pockets of stubborn, localized fat that are resistant to diet and exercise
- Have good skin elasticity, although this is now beginning to be less important with the advances of laser procedures such as SmartLipo™
It is also important that candidates for liposuction have realistic expectations of the surgery, which will be discussed thoroughly during the preliminary consultation with Dr. Mountcastle.
The Liposuction Procedure
While anesthesia is always used during the liposuction procedure, the level of sedation varies with the technique being performed and the amount of fat requiring removal. The vast majority of Dr. Mountcastle’s liposuction is now SmartLipo™ laser liposuction, which he performs in the office using a local anesthesia. A small amount of relaxation pills are usually given to control anxiety. Patients are extremely comfortable during the procedure, and being able to perform this procedure with the patient awake allows for a much better final result. The patient can work in concert with the doctor, rolling and changing positions to allow better sculpting. The patient will also not have to deal with the side effects of general anesthesia.
When performing the traditional liposuction procedure, Dr. Mountcastle will make several discreet incisions in order to access the excess fat located in pockets between the skin and muscle. Once the necessary incisions have been made, a sterile, diluted numbing fluid known as tumescent solution will be infused into the area being treated in order to prevent bleeding. A thin, hollow, stainless steel tube known as a cannula is then inserted and moved in a controlled series of back and forth motions in order to dislodge excess fat. The loosened fat is then suctioned out of the body using a surgical vacuum, suction pump, or syringe attached to the cannula. Traditional liposuction is typically performed in the hospital when combined with a procedure such as tummy tuck. Hospitals in general do not have laser liposuction machines due to their costs.
SmartLipo Laser Liposuction
For patients seeking a less invasive way to remove unwanted fat and recontour their bodies, Dr. Mountcastle is proud to offer SmartLipo™ laser liposuction at his Leesburg, Reston, Ashburn and Fairfax locations. Being the medical director of Radiance Medspa in Fairfax, Dr. Mountcastle performs a majority of his laser liposuction at this location.
Because the system uses laser energy to destroy fat cells and promoting collagen deposition for a tighter, more toned appearance, SmartLipo™ provides a minimally invasive alternative to traditional liposuction techniques. Laser liposuction only requires a local anesthetic, and recovery time is significantly reduced. Despite the less invasive nature of the procedure, it can usually accomplish your liposuction goals in just one visit. Although having liposuction performed under local anesthesia is not for everyone, the vast majority of patients complain of minimal discomfort during the procedure and many return to treat other areas.
During the SmartLipo™ procedure, a cannula is inserted through the necessary incision site. A laser attached to the cannula emits energy that dissolves fat more easily than traditional liposuction methods, allowing it to be easily drained away. The result is less bruising, less swelling, and post-procedural downtime. One of the main benefits of SmartLipo™ MPX is that it has two different wavelengths of laser, each designed to perform different functions. One wavelength is used to melt fat, while the other tightens the skin and increases collagen deposition. To learn more about this innovative alternative to traditional liposuction, contact Dr. Mountcastle today.
Because liposuction is often performed as an outpatient procedure, the recovery time is relatively short. Patients are able to return to work within a matter of days, and resume normal activities within approximately two weeks. Bruising and swelling is expected after surgery, and Dr. Mountcastle will prescribe any medications that may be necessary to manage discomfort. The full results of the liposuction procedure will be apparent after several months.
Maintaining Liposuction Results
Liposuction permanently removes fat cells from the body, which means that if you gain weight after the procedure, it will not accumulate in the same localized deposits. However, although fat is permanently removed, the procedure itself will not prevent you from regaining weight. It is important to maintain your attractive new shape with a healthy diet and exercise regimen.
